I’m Not Sure About Online Therapy… Is It Just Me?

Considering therapy but feeling hesitant about doing it online? We explore the common worries about virtual counselling and the unexpected benefits of finding an online therapist who truly understands.

Person typing on a laptop, searching "Find a Therapist UK", with a street visible outside.

That thought, “I think I need to talk to someone,” often arrives quietly. It might surface during a hectic commute, in the middle of a sleepless night, or when you realise you’re just going through the motions.

And so you start looking. You type ‘therapist’ into a search engine, and you’re met with a sea of faces on screens. The idea of an ‘online therapist’ might leave you feeling a little sceptical. Is it a proper, confidential conversation? Can you really build a connection with someone through a laptop? Will it actually work?

If you’re feeling this way, I can assure you it’s a very common reservation. For years, our picture of therapy has been shaped by film and television: a quiet, book-lined office, a comfortable sofa, and two people in a room. There’s a certain weight and reality to that image, and it’s completely normal to wonder if virtual counselling can ever match up.

Does It Feel as Real as Talking in Person?

This is probably the biggest question people have. Will it feel personal and connected, or will it be like another work video call? It’s a valid concern. We’ve all experienced the stilted awkwardness of a bad video connection.

But a therapy session is different. The focus isn’t on the technology; it's on the quality of the listening. I've found that once the conversation begins, the screen seems to melt away. The connection in therapy is built on being heard, understood, and responded to with empathy – and that can happen just as powerfully, sometimes even more so, when you are in your own familiar environment.

Interestingly, many clients tell us they find it easier to open up online. Being in their own home, perhaps with a pet asleep on their lap or a favourite mug in their hands, helps them feel more grounded and less self-conscious. There isn't the slight social pressure that comes with walking into a formal clinical setting. It’s just you, in your space, talking.

The Practical Side of Virtual Counselling

Let's talk about the practicalities, because this is where many of the online therapy benefits really shine. Finding a therapist used to be a postcode lottery. You were limited to whoever was within a reasonable driving distance.

Now, when you look for an online therapist in the UK, you have a genuine choice. You can find someone whose specialism and approach truly fit what you need, regardless of where you both live. This is huge. It means you’re not just settling for who is nearby; you’re choosing the right person for you.

Think about the logistics of a traditional appointment:

  • Leaving work early
  • Navigating traffic and finding parking
  • Sitting in a waiting room
  • The journey home, processing a deep conversation while on a busy train

With online sessions, you remove all that friction. You can fit a session into your lunch break without colleagues needing to know. You finish the conversation and you’re already home, able to sit quietly with your thoughts. This convenience isn't just a small perk; it makes sticking with therapy so much more manageable when life is already feeling overwhelming.

What if I’m Not Good with Technology?

Another common worry is about the tech itself. What if the WiFi drops? What if I can’t get the link to work? It’s enough to add another layer of anxiety when you’re already feeling stretched.

The reality is usually very simple. All you need is a private space, a smartphone, tablet or laptop, and a stable internet connection. We use a secure, professional platform, and joining a session is as easy as clicking a link we send you in an email. There’s no complex software to install.

And if technology does misbehave? We have a plan. Every therapist will have discussed a backup with you beforehand, which is usually just to switch to a simple phone call to finish the session. We don’t let a dodgy connection get in the way of your time.

Is Online CBT Effective?

We specialise in approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which work exceptionally well in an online format. CBT is a practical and collaborative type of therapy. It’s about understanding the link between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

Doing CBT online allows for easy sharing of resources, worksheets, and notes directly on screen. It’s a very focused and structured way of working that helps you build practical coping strategies. Whether you're struggling because low mood slowly creeps into everyday life, or because you find your body feels so tense all the time, this approach gives you tools you can use straight away.

It’s particularly helpful for tackling specific patterns, such as understanding why health anxiety can feel so convincing or addressing the constant need for reassurance from others.

Finding a Therapist Online: What to Look For

When you start your search, it’s important to know you’re in safe hands. Here are a few things to check for:

Qualifications: Is the therapist registered with a professional body like the BACP or UKCP? This ensures they are properly trained and adhere to a strict ethical code.

The Website: Does their website speak to you? Do they explain their approach clearly? You should get a sense of their personality and whether they feel like a good fit.

The Process: Is it clear how to book and what the fees are? Transparency is a sign of professionalism. Here, for instance, we keep it straightforward. Sessions are booked one at a time with no long-term commitment. Our fee is £68 for a full hour session.

Ultimately, the decision between online and in-person therapy is a personal one. There isn’t a ‘better’ option, only the one that is better for you, right now. For many, the accessibility, comfort, and convenience of online therapy have made getting support not just possible, but preferable.

If you’re on the fence, perhaps the first step is just to find out more. Reaching out doesn’t commit you to anything. It’s simply a way of gathering information so you can make a choice that feels right.

If you’d like to see if our approach could work for you, we invite you to get in touch. You can book an initial session directly through our website. We’re here to answer any questions you might have.
