CBT for Autism: Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy Online

We offer neurodivergent-affirming CBT, ensuring therapy supports your authentic self. Traditional CBT can sometimes miss the nuances of autistic experience. Our therapists have undertaken neurodivergent-affirming clinical training. They understand the importance of adapting therapeutic techniques to your specific needs.

CBT helps you to understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. For autistic individuals, this often involves exploring the impact of sensory sensitivities, executive function differences, and social communication styles. Our goal is to empower you with tools to manage distress and enhance your daily life.

Neurodivergent-Affirming CBT for Autism

Neurodivergent-affirming CBT recognises autism as a natural variation of human neurology, not a disorder to be 'cured'. Our therapists do not aim to change your core autistic traits. Instead, they help you address co-occurring mental health challenges like anxiety or depression. These challenges are often amplified by living in a neurotypical world.

We work collaboratively to develop coping mechanisms tailored to your individual profile. This might include strategies for managing sensory input, navigating social situations, or reducing burnout from masking. We ensure the therapeutic environment feels safe and predictable.

How Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is Adapted for Autistic Individuals

Adaptations are key to effective CBT for autistic adults. Our therapists use clear, concrete language, avoiding metaphor or abstract concepts where possible. Sessions focus on explicit skill-building and practical problem-solving. We respect differences in communication style.

For example, a therapist might use visual aids or written summaries to support understanding. Pacing is often adjusted to prevent overwhelm, allowing for processing time. We also incorporate interests and strengths into therapy, making the process more engaging. We validate the experience of social masking and its impact on mental health. Rather than challenging neurodivergent traits as 'cognitive distortions', we explore their function and impact. Therapists like Maureen Fenner and Ryan Anderson incorporate these adaptations into their work.

Addressing Co-occurring Anxiety and Sensory Overload

Autistic individuals frequently experience heightened anxiety and sensory overload. These can significantly affect daily functioning and quality of life. CBT provides tools to identify triggers and develop personalised strategies.

Our therapists can help you to understand your unique sensory profile. This includes developing a sensory regulation plan to proactively manage overwhelming environments. We also address social anxiety, which can arise from social communication differences and past negative experiences. Strategies may include gradual exposure to social situations or developing scripts for specific interactions. We also support individuals experiencing burnout from the emotional labour of masking.
